Episode 4: Lords of EverFree – The Two Hosts

The amazing 24-hour charity mare-a-thon organised by Inky Notebook of the Traveling Pony Museum to benefit Inked! Art for Africa, hosted by the wonderful bronies at Ponies Live Now and featuring interviewers from Everfree Radio and The Brony Show, has now drawn to a close! All charitable goals were met: The mare-a-thon not only pushed the charity program (organised by Scootaloo voice actress Maddy Peters) over its goal, but it also exceeded the mare-a-thon’s own goal of $5,000 given!

Inked! Art for Africa is now funded at over 107% of its goal, largely thanks to the generosity of the brony community.

It was a full 24 hours of video gaming, chatting, general silliness, and lots and lots of interviews. Along the way, the hundreds of bronies who showed up in the stream received encouragement in audio from three of the amazing VAs from the show: Ms. Andrea Libman (Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy), Ms. Ashleigh Ball (Rainbow Dash, Applejack), and ‘Inked! Art for Africa‘ organiser Miss Madeline Peters (Scootaloo) herself. Have a listen to their messages of encouragement!

Kickstarter Goal of $3000 Reached – Raffle Drawing Moved to May 5th

EverFree Radio will be hosting the drawings for the Traveling Pony Museum’s charity raffle LIVE on our streams May 5th. Those interested can still buy tickets up to show time to get entered into the raffle. Winners will be selected for various prizes, with one lucky winner receiving an all-expense paid trip to either Bronycon or EverfreeNW.

The Traveling Pony Museum’s kickstarter has reached their goal of $3,000, but they’re still accepting more donations! Let’s see how high we can push this charity, shall we? Your donations go toward assisting the TPM get from convention to convention to show off the creations of the community, and to help them get to places like the Seattle Children’s Hospital, where they will visit the sick children and bring Smiles to their faces. If you can’t help financially, you can also help by just spreading the word of the charity through social media websites like Facebook or Twitter!

Another thing you can do is participate in the Dear Princess Celestia project, where you write a handwritten letter to Lauren Faust that will be compiled and presented to her at Bronycon in June. If you don’t want to mail one in through snail mail, there will be places at the convention itself where you can write one up then and there.

Last but certainly not least, MagnaStorm has created an auction to help the museum and charity do what it does; he is auctioning off a custom plushie, made to the winner’s specifications whether it be a canon character or an OC. The charity is hosted right on DeviantArt!

Hey everyone, there is a charity out there called Seeds of Kindness sponsored on Bronies for Good that is trying to raise money for two major projects run by the nonprofit organization Your Siblings. The first $10,000 will be put toward building a clinic in Uganda, while subsequent donations will be put into the Green Village in Brundi.

The idea is that donors will receive an exclusive music album specially composed for the event by a large amount of participating brony musicians, and top donors will receive handcrafted gifts created by artisans of the community. EverFree Radio’s part in all of this will be hosting the entire album, live, with dozens of musicians participating in the IRC during the event. Some musicians featured in the album are: MIU, Beatle Bronies, AndTheRainfall, VoodooPony, and NavyBrony. Also participating in the chat will be The Living Tombstone, Tsyolin, and Telofy, second chair and founding member of Your Siblings; he will be there to answer any questions people have about the charity.

Beside these two rather superficial facts, it may be somewhat difficult to find a common attribute that works with all three. What if I said that there is a deeper similarity between these characters that goes far beyond appearances? What you can learn from these girls may reveal a bit about what it is to be a Brony… and that we are not alone.

So what is the common element between these three characters? In a nutshell, these three were “created” by fans, and because of the fans’ admiration, the characters were eventually “canonized” by their original production companies. But there is more: a common and very endearing attribute that has hooked the fans. I will like to take the time to explain what makes these characters so special and why it’s such an honor to see our little pony among their ranks.

Haku Yowane

Let’s start with the gray-haired girl on the left. Her name is Haku Yowane and she is a Vocaloid. Grossly generalizing what a Vocaloid is, she’s an actual Japanese computer program that you can make sing.

Haku is a fan-made creation, not originally part of the Vocaloid product line. Vocaloids are very, very hard to program. When making them sing, new users have a difficult time keeping them on-beat and in key. When this happens, they don’t sound right. The voice, which is core to what a Vocaloid is, becomes slightly slurred and a little out of tune.

Haku became an avatar for people who tried their hardest to program a Vocaloid, but just couldn’t get things right. By extension, this was the personality that the fans gave Haku herself. No matter how hard Haku tried, everything she did became a big pile of fail. Her heart was always in the right place, and the fans came to adore her. She wasn’t perfect, but gave it her all.

This… struck a chord… with the Vocaloid fandom, and the company that made Vocaloids (Crypton Future Media) officially canonized her. When that happened, Haku’s popularity exploded. All over NicoNico and YouTube Haku fan songs, art, and even animations abound.

Cirno the Ice Fairy

The blue girl on the right is Cirno, a character from the Touhou video game series. Originally she was a simple 2nd level boss in the game named the “Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.”

What rocketed her into Touhou infamy was how she was introduced. In the manual, the developer had placed a simple instructional screenshot. Here he laid out the location of the score, spell points, player location, and enemies. When it came to label the boss, he used Cirno as an example. Because bosses, even low level ones, can be really tough to defeat in Touhou games, the developer labeled her “The Idiot.”

The fans took the label and ran with it. In fan canon, she became a well meaning ice fairy who isn’t all that bright, but means well and tries her best. She’s also a touch on the odd side and a little immature.

The developers noticed the large fandom that Cirno accumulated and made her an actual player character in later games. Cirno, too, has a wealth of music and art devoted to her. Touhou overall has a huge ecosystem of fanworks that is elaborated on below.

Letting Go

Because we all know about our third friend in the picture, I would like to take a step back and talk about another interesting phenomenon that relates to all three. The internet has made art, music, and other basic constituents of culture increasingly easy to share.

The outpouring of fan interaction and creation with products such as Touhou and the Vocaloids are a direct consequence of companies allowing the fans to take control of their property. They don’t steal it, instead they enhance and remix it. This become a core part of online culture because it fosters fanbases that self-feed in a way.

But what if the company that originally made the product decided to incorporate or ”canonize” some of the fan works? This reciprocation spurs whole new avenues of fan interaction. When this happens, even something as silly as pastel-colored magical ponies can actually have a very deep meaning.

Many companies have a hard time adjusting to this. Some businesses that will try and hold on to their properties with almost a white-knuckle fear. Some will even try and sue to try retaining control. This produces an adversarial relationship with the very fans the company should foster. I’m certain you can think of a company or two that has done this in the past.

Normally, consumers passively interact with large companies. They create a product, fans buy it with money, and both are happy. Now a new social environment is rising which extends beyond the buzzword “Social Networking.” People reach out and connect to important content online. They want to be a part of the process and a part of the dialog. This is very, very new and something not really seen on this scale before.

Looking above, and then looking at our own community, think of the wonderful things that happen with a “hands off” corporate philosophy. Look at what art has grown and what music was made. Bear in mind that no fandom is perfect. We have our icky and dark sides, but we try our best. Sometimes, even with the best intentions, a situation can come up that results in a big pile of fail. Those times suck. But when it happens, you have to pick yourself up, brush off the dust, and try and figure out what went wrong.

The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth

Vocaloids and Touhou represent a neat phenomenon. They are two very different products: one a desktop music synthesizer, and the other a shoot-em-up game. Their creators let their fan bases to grow and remix their content in strange new ways.

The Touhou art, music and games made by the fans are quite stunning, and in some ways even exceed what the original company makes. The Vocaloid ecosystem is just as amazing. That too has spawned art, music, games, and even cartoons by the fans for the fans.

I find it amazing that in each community, including our own, we have a very special character who we love. She’s not too bright, she tries her best, but we love her anyway. We love her because we see ourselves in her.

As you may be familiar with, our usual format has been to release episodes with multiple segments every Monday, and minicasts sporadically when the situation calls for it. However, some segments take longer to finish than others, or require us to wait for approval. So, from now on, rather than delay the release of finished content to bundle it with other content, we will be releasing content as its own stand-alone episode as soon as it is ready.

We will also be changing the format of our posts, with content released under their respective categories and with each type of content having a certain post format. This way, you will, at a glance, be able to see what type of episode a release is, and easily find episodes of a specific type.

Note: This change also means we will not be releasing content according to a specific schedule, other than our episode reviews every Sunday, so keep checking our site and subscribe to our YouTube account to keep up to date with our releases.

The long and short of it is that people can submit their music to be judged by a panel comprised of Lampy and Harbisis of Equestria Music, Michelle Creber (who I assume you are all familiar with) and community members My Little Dashie, BronyDanceParty and WoodenToaster. The winner selected by this panel will be given the opportunity to collaborate with Omnipony.

If you wish to participate, you can submit your music to equestriamusic@hotmail.co.uk with subject EMC 2012 Submission, assuming it adheres to the following rules:

• 3 submissions maximum.
• All submissions must be your own.
• Submissions must be pony related.
• PMVs are not allowed.
• Download link must be in submission e-mail.

You have until April 7th to submit, so get get those tracks in!

Furthermore, we will be streaming the results of the contest on our PonyStream on April 14th, with various guest joining us in our chat. We will be announcing the exact time and providing further details and all the relevant links later as the date approaches.

Short of the fan-dubs done by the very talented Ogatamon, the Japanese Brony movement appears strangely absent. Given the anime-inspired elements of “Friendship is Magic”, you might think that they would be all over this sort of show; the wonderful stylistic art, slice of life plot settings, and vividly colorful characters absolutely pop! What’s going on? Why have our friends in the East been so quiet?

Well, there are lots of reasons, but fear not. There exists a small community of Japanese pony fans…you just need to know where to look.

Japanese TV

My Little Pony has it pretty rough in Japan. First and foremost, foreign television shows  are rarely syndicated there. The US is similar; Americans would rather remake a show than show it’s original version, even if it’s in English (ie: “The Office”). Since the Japanese animation market is already saturated, it is nearly impossible to get anything non-anime broadcast there.

There are are cultural barriers as well. The most glaring example is that Japanese audiences generally perceive cartoons with talking animal protagonists as preschool-aged entertainment. You think defending your love of a cartoon aimed at the 6-12 age group is bad? Try justifying one marketed to 3 to 6 year olds!

Yes, there are classic anime shows such as Kimba the White Lion, but that was made in 1965. Things have changed over the last five decades. Topping this off, the My Little Pony franchise is handled exclusively by a single company called Takara/Tomy, which is Hasbro’s only real, limited interface with the market.

That’s not to say there hasn’t been a success story or two. Powerpuff Girls proved to be really popular via satellite. However, the broadcast version was the widely panned Powerpuff Girls Z remake.

On the Internet

In the wilds of the Internet, a small Japanese MLP fanbase does exist. The first place you can look is a website called “ReadMe!Girls! Diary“. This blog appears to have started as a Powerpuff Girls site, and expanded into one about American cartoons in general. At current count, there are about 60 “Friendship is Magic” entries. Mostly, it explains the odd culture that has sprung from the show, along with explaining things such as what a “Brony” is and the Derpy phenomenon.

For those who want to catch an episode, the entire series and some fan content is fansubbed on NicoNico Douga (literally, “Smile Video”). NicoNico has a very unique way of showing content, where comments are scrolled on the screen. It almost has a livestream feel to it. Sadly, access to the content requires you to register on the website, which is a little difficult for people who can’t read Japanese.

Do you have an itching for Japanese fanart? You can find a good deal of it on Pixiv, which is something akin to deviantART. Of particular note, there is a fan-manga about Luna currently being published there called “Lunatic” that’s pretty cool.

Over at 2ch.net, you can find a brisk thread about MLP under the cartoon category. Many of the conversations eerily mirror what the fans talk about in English, but once a while you will run into a unique Japanese perspective on the show. Most of the fan memes translated over fairly well. You will find comments about Trollestia, Derpy, and the dreaded “Cupcakes” that someone took the time to translate. (Why!? Why would you do that!?)

One example of the odder discussions theorizes about the Equestrian train system, prompting this little gem which postulats where Equestria is located based on American geography.

Manehatten is really supposed to be “Manhattan”.
Phillydelphia is actually real city southwest of New York called “Philadelphia”.
The mountain range close to Equestria is actually the “Appalachians”.
The large forests around the Appalachians is close to Delaware. This area is Ponyville.
This places Equestria within the state of Pennsylvania.
The train was heading towards the desert areas going though Midwest such as Kansas and Nebraska. This was set in the 1860s, or the “Wild West” era.

Cultural Differences

From time to time there are clear cultural disconnects. One of the more glaring ones was when Twilight got sprayed by a skunk in “Winter Wrap Up.” There are no skunks in Japan, and Twi was sprayed off screen. The now-befuddled audience sees her follow some badger-like animals, and then suddenly she’s taking a bath in what’s translated as “ketchup.” There is no apparent connection between the two. They understand something was revolting, but the “clothespin on the nose” clue doesn’t translate. (Japanese commonly hold their nose, hold a cloth over the face, or wear a facemask).

Another example of this disconnect are the spa scenes. In Japan, the imagery of girls in bathhouses is seen as a shade on the steamier side. It’s jarring them to watch a cartoon about multicolored ponies feature a “bath scene.”

On the flip side, there are some scenes and situations that work much better in Japanese. Luna’s archaic speech is one instance. In Japan, people of authority say things in different ways when talking down to others. What made Luna work so well in Japanese was that she was obviously in a social situation, and didn’t need to talk down to others. It wasn’t that she was being authoritative, it was much more obvious through her formal language that she simply didn’t know.

The “Heart and Hooves” plot where Big Mac and Cheerlee baby-talked to each other also resonated. Public displays of affection in Japan are actually shunned because they’re seen as attention-seeking. Consequently, the awkward reactions of the Ponyville citizenry made perfect sense in that context.

Memes and Regional Attitudes

Are there Japanese MLP Memes? Eeyup! The most obvious one is that Big Macintosh has his very own nickname. He’s almost universally called “Aniki” (兄貴) which translates to “big brother.”  He is in the top three of “best pony” in Japan. The other two are Fluttershy, and, oddly enough, Cheerilee-Sensei. In the case of Fluttershy, she has been promoted to “Honorary Japanese” because of how she behaves. Rainbow Dash is almost always subbed using male speech, making her a “Bokunoko” (僕の子), and Applejack speaks with a thick Osaka accent.

Those, in a very tiny nutshell, are the Japanese fans. They are not many in number, but are slowly growing. Feel free to poke around. Be careful though. Posting English in a Japanese comment section is really seen as poor form. Spamming text that others can’t read doesn’t help much with starting a dialog.

As you can see, there is a lot of potential for some really awesome cross-cultural MLP love. In part two of this series, I’ll show that the wonderfully odd fandom that has spring from these curious little ponies is not new. In fact, it has manifested twice in Japan over the strangest of things.

The Last Roundup has been put back up on iTunes. Derpy’s name has been removed, and her voice changed so as to not be as silly as it was before. Unfortunately, this means that the name ‘Derpy’ has been retroactively un-canonized, due to being ‘offensive’. Her eyes have also been mostly ‘un-derped’ in the animation. There is still a little remaining, but it’s mostly gone. See here for the new, edited, version: Edited Derpy Section.

This is not good news for our favorite mailmare and probably means that any future plans they had for her old self have been back-burnered, or removed completely. Hasbro, we are saddened and dissapoint at your decision to censor our favorite pony. She was fine as she was.
